If your teen seems closed off or doesn’t want to discuss these issues with you, you need to start looking for warning signs that your teen may be participating in inappropriate online activity or that some form of online exploitation is taking place. These can include any number of uncharacteristic actions, but here are a few common ones you should be aware of:

Becoming secretive about online activities

Becoming obsessive about being online

Getting angry when they can’t get online

Receiving phone calls from people you do not know or making calls to numbers you do not recognize

Receiving gifts, mail, or packages from someone you do not know

Withdrawing from family and friends

Hiding screens or turning off computers when an adult enters a room
